Does anyone have details concerning the ST's printer/Centronics port?

I've heard conflicting information about it: Some claim it to be a bog standard port, others say it is/was very nearly - but not quite standard!

I'm trying to get a printout from an emulated ST in the form of STeem running on Linux. While I can edit to my hearts content, when I try to print off a hardcopy, the printer remains steadfastly silent!
